Pritchett clinches NHRA Factory Stock championship

Leah Pritchett clinched the 2018 SAM Tech NHRA Factory Stock Showdown Series championship in her Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak at the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals, racing to her third consecutive win of the season and earning her first championship in her first full year competing in the class.

Pritchett entered the action at the Texas Motorplex facility coming off of victories at the NHRA U.S. Nationals in early September and at the NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis, where she became the first NHRA driver in the Factory Stock Showdown class to make a pass in the seven-second range. She qualified No. 10 and posted her quickest pass of the weekend, an 8.079-second Elapsed Time at 169.64 mph, to defeat Aaron Stanfield in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday, Oct. 7.

After advancing past Randy Taylor in the quarterfinals, Pritchett moved on to a dramatic semifinal grouping that also featured co-points leaders Stephen Bell and Arthur Kohn, with Pritchett trailing each by a single point. She squared off against Bell with her season on the line, leaving first with a clutch 0.038-second reaction time and recording a winning 8.107-second 169.00-mph mark.

Kohn was up next, needing to win his semifinals match against Kevin Skinner to extend the championship battle to the final round. Skinner took the win, crowning Pritchett as the 2018 NHRA Factory Stock Showdown Champion. She would add the cherry on top by taking out No. 1 qualifier Skinner in the final with an arrow-straight 8.106-second pass down the track to earn her third consecutive event win.   [10/11/18]

Pritchett sets FS/XX record and wins at Gateway

Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak driver Leah Pritchett continued to own the Factory Stock Showdown class, celebrating her second consecutive event win one day after becoming first in the class to run in the seven-second range during the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

The double-duty driver made history during Factory Stock Showdown qualifying on Saturday, Sept. 22, shrugging off a recent decision by the NHRA to effectively slap a 50-lb. weight handicap on all Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak vehicles to post a 7.936-second E.T. and become the first NHRA driver in the class to make a hit in the seven-second range.

Despite owning a new entry in the NHRA record books, Pritchett would wrap up qualifying No. 2 after her teammate Mark Pawuk ran even lower with a 7.929 E.T. to earn the pole. It marked the third consecutive event at which the Mopar brand’s modern-day package car, the supercharged, 354-cubic-inch HEMI®-engine-powered Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, earned the top two spots on the qualifying charts.

Pritchett, winner and No. 1 qualifier at the most recent NHRA Factory Stock Showdown event at the NHRA U.S. Nationals earlier this month, kept the seven-second train rolling with a 7.948 pass at 172.70-mph to defeat former NHRA Pro Stock racer Allen Johnson in the opening round. She used an 8.031-second pass to send home Pete Gasko Jr. in the quarterfinals and then knocked out Arthur Kohn in the semifinals with an 8.011 E.T.

In the final, Pritchett (far lane) nudged up near the seven-second range in an easy defeat of Stephen Bell, who knocked out her teammate Pawuk in round two, unleashing her Kevin Helms-tuned Drag Pak with a blistering 8.001 ET to claim victory after Bell experienced problems early.

"Incredible weekend by the ‘el Bandito’ team with Mopar," said Pritchett who moved up to the No. 2 spot in the FSXX standings. "We carried that momentum from the U.S. Nationals without a hiccup. That extra 25-pounds didn't seem to faze this Mopar power. I'm not saying it was easy by any means. We put it to it every single round and that's extremely impressive and a testament to the durability of the race cars, the powerplant and the people that Schumacher has put in place to run this program.

"We are in a fantastic spot, second place in the points. It's like Christmas Eve going into these last races. I really wouldn't want a different perspective. We have a little bit of freshening up to do but overall this has been an incredible weekend of just straight teamwork all the way around, and the Mopar power just continues to show through and we continue to want to show up."

The win was the fourth consecutive in Factory Stock Showdown by a Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak driver, dating back to the NHRA Bristol event in June.  [10/11/18]

Ram 1500 named to Wards ‘10 Best User Experience’ list

To select the best of the best, WardsAuto editors evaluated the overall user experience of 25 vehicles, rating them on their user friendliness, infotainment features, sound systems, vehicle connectivity, driver assistance technology, information/displays, system compatibility, voice control, materials and overall value.

“The Ram 1500 earned Wards 10 Best Interiors honors earlier this year and now lands a Wards 10 Best UX trophy because its user experience is unparalleled among full-size pickup trucks,” said Tom Murphy, WardsAuto managing editor. “A truck this size needs a big command center and Ram delivers with a 12-in. vertical touchscreen that seamlessly controls phone pairing, audio, climate adjustments and upgraded navigation.”      [10/11/18]

Epling’s Hellcat sets record at St. Louis Mopar event

A weekend of beautiful cars, of fast cars, and of beautifully-fast cars rocked Gateway Motorsports Park during the recent Monster Muscle Car Weekend on Sept. 14-15. The two-day event is a celebration of Mopar culture, great drag racing, and fellowship with like-minded car enthusiasts promoted by Phil Painter, who originated the Mopars at the Strip series in Las Vegas.

Leon Epling (right) turned heads and broke records during the event as the Hellcat he tuned made a lap of 8.51 seconds at 159.23 mph, making his car the quickest Hellcat in the world. His son, Jason (left), drove the car during its record-breaking pass. The Epling Garage also held the previous record of 8.71 at 157 mph.

The action on the drag strip was headlined by the Hellcat and Demon Nationals, a festival of speed celebrating the modern Challenger and its two powerful offshoots. Taking the victory in the stock Hellcat Shootout was Mike Muenz, with Jason Fritter earning the win in the stock Demon Shootout.[10/11/18]

Hagenhoff wins Victory NSS championship

There were 47 Victory Nostalgia Super Stock cars for the series’ final event at the Monster MuscleCar Weekend Race at St. Louis.

In his first Victory NSS race, Mike Schaefer took his 1968 Hemi Dart to the Winners Circle.

The Championship went down to the wire and Jim Hagenhoff in his “American Muscle” Plymouth claimed the crown by less than one round over Dennis Spurgeon. Hagenhoff has raced with the series since its inception and this is his time as Champion. He is also the first Victory NSS series champion to have not won a points race, but his consistency throughout the season paid off.    [10/11/18]

Jacobsmeyer rises to the occasion at Michigan Funny Car Nationals

The St. Louis driver and his Allstar/Hot Shots Dodge Challenger Nitro Funny Car team qualified third in the Round Robin event, meaning that he just missed being in the final round. Then the bit of luck made its appearance as Mike McIntire’s “McAttack” suffered engine damage and could not make the call for the final. Jacobsmeyer was in.

In the final his opponent, Mike McElwee in “Buzzy’s Nitro Bomber” had to pedal after the car went up in smoke. Jacobsmeyer crossed the line in 5.745 seconds at 251.40 mph for the win.    [10/11/18]
