The pistons have a pretty serious dome and the non-coated piston’s shoulder is .020 below the block deck when installed. Leverentz uses rings from Ackerly and Childs. Static compression for the engine shows up at 8.5-1, which might seem a little low until you remember this engine has an 8-71 BDS blower up top and then 8.5 compression actually seems like a lot for a gas burner. The engine is assembled using Clevite bearings and Leverentz does increase the clearance of the rods and crank bearing from a norm of three-thousandths to 4.5 thousandths for the supercharged engine. With the additional bearing clearances for the rods and mains, proper oiling is vital. A Milodon oil pump, pickup, and pan are recommended by Oddy’s.

A set of aluminum Hemi heads straight out of the Mopar Performance catalog were ported and polished and flow tested and Leverentz also did a custom valve job. The stainless valves from Conrad Dahl’s Victory Performance are standard Hemi specs in diameter.

One of the unusual features of this supercharged engine is the customer didn’t want to be bothered with setting valves so an Isky Mega Hydraulic cam (.530 lift), lifters and spring package was used. The engine easily revved to over 7000 rpm, so the hydraulics didn’t seem to hurt.

The part that really makes the engine produce is, of course, the supercharger and the fuel delivery system. The intake and 8.71 supercharger are from Blower Drive Service. A pair of 10.50 Chuck Nuytten carbs wirh eight pounds of fuel pressure at idle send the 93 octane to the engine. An MSD 6AL box and wires firing NGK plugs complete the package.

After assembly the engine was dyno tested at the Oddy shop. Here’s how it was set up for the dyno tests. The blower was underdriven five percent, timing was set at 28 degrees and the carbs had 90/95 jets.

The blower made 17.5 lbs of boost and the engine made its peak power of 961 at 7100 rpm. It made its peak torque number (738 ft lbs) at 5400 rpm.

So, there you have the story. A street and strip Hemi with a hydraulic cam, carbs, and small blower running on pump gas that makes nearly 1000 hp. It should be a low maintenance, high performance affordable Hemi. The line forms at the right…of Buffalo.
