With all of the squares marked off, begin painting the black ones using the same masking strategy used on the vertical surfaces. We worked one square at a time. Don’t rush.

As we make our way across the roof, our careful preparation work pays dividends in the form of perfectly symmetric squares that merge gracefully at all four corners.

The finished job is a dead ringer for the effect used on the original Rampage Dart. Sure, some may say this was a waste of time considering that the car will be stripped down to bare metal later on. But until then, the car looks way cooler and we’ve had a great dress rehearsal for when we apply the checker board pattern for real in the spray booth.
