DAIMLER TO SELL CHRYSLER?

The Oct. 25, 2006, issue of the New York Times has an article with the shocking speculation that Daimler may be thinking of selling off the Chrysler Group. Chrysler has lost $1.5 billion in the last three months.

Although DaimlerChrysler’s chief financial officer Bodo Ubber would not say that Chrysler was for sale, he did say, ”We don’t exclude anything here.”

SPY SHOTS: DODGE CAR OF TOMORROW

Petty Enterprises has a one-day open house for the Richard Petty Fan Club each year. Fan club members come from all over the U.S. and the world to get to meet the King up close and personal, and to roam the Petty Enterprises shops – not your everyday occurrence!

Our intrepid Editor at Large, Glen Grissom, got himself invited; look for an upcoming story on MoparMax detailing this special old school gathering. But we couldn’t wait to show you a couple of spy pics of a work-in-progress NASCAR Nextel Cup Dodge COT the Petty crew had out. These are as close as you’re going to get to one of these COT until they roll out on the track in 2007.

This version without the rear wing is going to cost $5,000 each and be supplied by NASCAR to the teams. The wing will make it look more like a modern “tuner car,” but you get an idea of how boxy and non-aerodynamic the nose is from these images. Looks very ‘80s doesn’t it?

The COT has a completely new chassis underneath and most driver reports are that it runs OK in traffic, but is a real handful by itself. It’s gong to cost the teams mucho bucks to do this conversion to the COT. Basically they have to build 10-12 new cars per driver – and the final specs aren’t final yet.

Whew, no wonder it costs $15--$20 million to run a front running Cup team these days. [10/25/06]
