IHRA sportsman programs go all-bracket racing for 2018

The International Hot Rod Association sportsman program will be moving to an all-bracket racing format for the first time in the organization's history in 2018. The IHRA will produce both the Summit SuperSeries and the new Summit Sportsman Spectacular programs next season.

The IHRA Summit SuperSeries will return for a 17th season and will continue to be the leading bracket racing program for Top, Mod and Junior Dragster competitors in North America. This program is hosted by nearly 100 member tracks and has over 8,000 active and specifically registered participants. The program recently secured a multiple-year renewal from title sponsor Summit Racing Equipment.

The major change in the IHRA lineup will be the switch from the class racing-based Summit Sportsman National Championship series to the newly created Summit Sportsman Spectacular. The new bracket racing-based program consists of 20 races over ten weekends. Summit Racing Equipment will support the program through a new multi-year sponsorship.

The change to an all-bracket racing program is a result of input from racers, partners, and tracks and comes after a five-year effort to improve participation levels in IHRA class racing. The previous touring series saw multiple format changes all aimed at keeping the series viable for the racers, host tracks, and sponsors. While there continues to be a core group of dedicated class racers who supported certain events, there simply hasn't been enough entries to make a series work. (Is this sounding familiar this year?)

The new Summit Sportsman Spectacular bracket events will be targeted to Top, Mod and Junior racers looking for a value-oriented and fun double-race weekend. The series will work in conjunction with the Summit SuperSeries to provide grassroots bracket racers new opportunities and events that are designed to provide maximum value for the participants.

Full details of the Summit Sportsman Spectacular will be released as soon as the event dates are confirmed. No mention of any IHRA professional classes so far.   [10/22/17]

We welcome Jill

Jill Caputo Armstrong is the new driver of the “Maulin’ Magnum” owned and tuned by Mopar Max Editor, Richard Kratz. Little did she know when she signed on with the race team that she might be drafted to write an article or two for the magazine.

‘No Mercy’ FC to make first NHRA race at Las Vegas

The “No Mercy” Nitro Funny Car will enter its first NHRA event Oct. 26-29 at the Toyota Nationals in Las Vegas. The team's veteran Crew Chief, Johnny West, will be making the tuning calls, as well as advising the crew and overseeing the operation. Tim Gibbons, President and CEO of Castle Rock Trucks, will take the wheel of the NMR Dodge Charger for the weekend as regular driver, Chris Bennett, will continue pursuing his license upgrade during the Monday test session following the national event. Chris is an accomplished and proven Nostalgia Funny Car/Fuel Altered driver who is just two runs shy of obtaining his long awaited professional license.

“It has always been my lifelong dream and ambition to own and drive a professional NHRA Nitro Funny Car,” Chris said. “We bought this car two years ago and in that time we have put together a quality race program that has exceeded all of our expectations. We sold all of our Nostalgia Funny Car equipment to build this new car, but as a self-funded team it has taken us much longer than any of us would have liked to ensure we were ready for a national event. We’ve done some private testing with Johnny getting familiar with our combination and I’m confident we are very close to having a competitive nitro coupe.”

No Mercy Racing LLC is owned by Jeff Bennett, Chris Bennett and Brad Miner. Jeff Bennett, NMR Assistant Crew Chief, is a three-time winner of the AHRA Nitro Funny Car World Championship and is the seventh quickest and fastest Fuel Altered driver of all time. His son, Chris, devoted 20 years of his life to military service and retired in 2015 with honors as a U.S. Air Force pilot. NMR Team Chief, Brad Miner, is a long-time crewman who previously raced with co-owner Jeff on his Nitro Funny car/Fuel Altered efforts, in addition to crew positions on several nitro teams over the years. Arrington Performance sold, will move operation to Michigan

Mike Copeland, CEO of Diversified Creations, has purchased Arrington Performance, which deals with Chrysler and Dodge HEMI-powered vehicles.

As part of the purchase, Copeland is moving Arrington Performance from Martinsville, VA, to Brighton, MI. The new location will be adjacent to the Diversified Creations facility but will have its own full complement of specialized salespeople and fabricators, along with vehicle-build, engine-build, dyno, and warehouse facilities.

Arrington Performance will continue the use of its existing website www.shophemi.com and will be updated to include many products not previously available through the site.

“Diversified Creations builds all types of performance and off-road vehicles, including resto-mods and pro-touring cars,” said Copeland. “The first ever Hellcat engine swap into the Roadkill’s ‘General Mayhem’ Dodge Charger was performed by Diversified.

“Our goal is to expand Arrington’s performance presence by adding innovative products and services for the vehicle platforms they’re already well-known for, while adding new offerings for other MOPAR-powered vehicles.”   [10/22/17]

SRT Power Chiller™ in 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Wins Award

The SRT Power Chiller™, a key component of the record-setting, 840-horsepower 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, is among Popular Science’s best of What’s New for 2017.

“The Best of What’s New awards honor the innovations that shape the future,” says Joe Brown, Editor in Chief, Popular Science. “From life-saving technology to incredible space engineering to gadgets that are just breathtakingly cool, this is the best of what’s new.”

And cool this feature is, or does, literally. A production car first, the SRT Power Chiller uses the car’s air conditioning refrigerant to help further cool the air entering the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® Demon V-8’s cylinders. Cooler air contains more oxygen molecules, helping the engine deliver maximum output of 840 horsepower with 100+ high-octane unleaded fuel.

Popular Science magazine’s annual 2017 Best of What’s New awards, covering the top 100 tech innovations of the year in 11 categories, are announced in the December 2017 issue, which reached newsstands on Oct. 17, 2017. [10/22/17]

Capps get runner-up finish in Dallas but maintains points lead

For the second year in a row, Mopar Funny Car driver Ron Capps went to the final round of the NHRA FallNationals at Texas Motorplex near Dallas, but he again came up just short of winning at the all-concrete drag strip for the second time in his career. Still, Capps’ final-round appearance was the 12th of the year for his HEMI®-powered Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car from Don Schumacher Racing (DSR), and the 19th time this season that at least one Mopar Dodge from DSR has gone to the final round in the category through 22 events.

Capps qualified No. 2 and matched up against stout No. 1 qualifier Robert Hight in the final round. Capps moved first with a .038-second reaction time and turned in a solid 3.927-second lap at 329.18 mph. It was not enough to overtake Hight though, who made a pass of 3.877 at 332.34 after a reaction time of .054.

Capps, the 2016 Funny Car champion, maintained his points lead, but the eight-time winner this season is now just 24 markers ahead of Hight with only two races remaining in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship playoffs, Oct. 26-29 in Las Vegas and the World Finals in Pomona, CA, on Nov. 9-12.

Beckman and the Infinite Hero Dodge Charger R/T team from DSR took an unusual path to the semis. He first took down J.R.  Todd in round one as both cars lost traction, forcing the drivers to pedal, but Beckman reached the finish line first. He next was scheduled to face Daniel Wilkerson in round two, but Wilkerson had a mechanical issue at the starting line, necessitating that his team shut the car off. Beckman won the race on a solo even as his car went up in smoke near half-track. His valiant march then came to an end at the hands of Capps, but not before he moved to fourth in the standings.

Matt Hagan and Tommy Johnson Jr. went out in the first round in their Dodge Charger R/T Funny Cars from DSR. Hagan hazed the tires just off the starting line in the Mopar Pennzoil car and could never catch opponent Jonnie Lindberg, despite the Swedish driver having to pedal the car near half-track. Tommy Johnson Jr. also bowed out in round one after his Make-A-Wish machine was defeated by John Force. Both cars struck the tires, and Force’s car later backfired, but he was still able to turn on the win light.   [10/22/17]
