MoparMax: The results speak for themselves; you had the most horsepower and torque as well as the most vacuum at idle. If there were one thing that surprised you as far as the end result, what would that be?
TH: We found out our basic combination of ring packages, cylinder wall finish and focusing on getting everything straight and true worked. We have been doing this “detail work” for years and we know it makes power. If I had to say what one thing surprised me, I would have to say the Comp Cams camshaft. It flat out, no BS, made more power and vacuum than we thought possible.
MoparMax: As a professional engine builder what is the one thing you would tell our readers to look for when choosing parts, an engine builder or both?

TH: Quite simply the one thing that really counts is the “combination” of all the above you mentioned. It isn’t going to be one part or one operation that sets records and proves to bereliable. It is the complete combination of the entire engine, from induction system, camshafts, cylinder heads, oil systems and machine work.
MoparMax: Now that fame and fortune has rolled into R&S Racing are there plans to grow the business and add some employees?
TH: We have no plans to make any changes as of now. I like doing the engines myself and letting them speak for themselves.
MoparMax: I know that a victory like this means a lot to you. I have raced against you in S/Pro and I know how tough you are when it comes to competition. What makes you proudest of this accomplishment?
TH: That is an easy one to answer, the family involvement and the pride involved in setting the goal and then going to Denver and winning the contest.
MoparMax: Thanks for the time and candid answers, I appreciate it and I know you couldn’t tell me all the “secrets” you put into this championship 440" small-block. After talking to you I think most of the “secrets” are skill, patience, hard work and solid engineering ideas. Congratulations!!!
