Since I lucked into two original instruction sheets, we can see both ides at the same time. The introduction paragraph reads; “The 1965, king-sized, Dodge Coronet 500, 2-door hardtop with its record breaking performance is the choice of the Ramchargers. Tastefully styled, safety engineered, distinctive interior and new, fresh colors make the ’65 Coronet a real beauty. With seven engine choices, from 225 to 426 cubic inches, Coronet can fit every driving need. For your convenience, there’s a floor-on-the-floor or floor mounted, 3 speed automatic transmission”. Check out the tidy illustration of the candy striped Ramchargers version at the lower right.

By far the biggest shock is the discovery that the kit provides the option of a full length dual exhaust system – as used on big block 383 and 426 wedge powered Coronets – or the A990’s unique single exhaust pipe and transverse mounted muffler (parts 6 and 7 on the instruction sheet). Remember, all 201 (give or take) A990 Dodge and Plymouth Race Hemis were delivered with this single exhaust system. It is amazing that AMT was hip enough to include the single exhaust system and shows there was close factory cooperation when this kit was designed and tooled.

The pen points to the transverse muffler and single tail pipe as installed. Note the correct ribbed muffler case. Compare it to the dual exhaust setup on the right. The instruction sheet says: “When you use the straight through pipe and cross-over muffler, cut standard pipes and muffler from rear axle”. Of all the vintage AMT Coronet kits I bought during this feeding frenzy, all were assembled with the dual exhaust system or just the headers. Not a single one has the single A990 exhaust setup.
