The West Coast Hemi’s team found another SoCal Super Stock veteran Phil Mandella leading their qualifying efforts and landing fifth with an 8.876, Jerry Jenkins sitting sixth at 8.883 and team leader Michael Ogburn with an 8.900 placing his Cuda in the number eight spot.


Saturday morning found all the competitors at the scales before the first round to make sure they all met minimum weight prior to eliminations; all of the fuel cells were filled and sealed as well.

Rick Houser defeated a red-lighting Charlie Westcott Sr. in the first round running 8.856 with a strong .029 reaction time.

Mark Vieira from Turlock, California finished qualifying in the thirteenth position with his beautiful flamed Hemi Dart. Joe Faherty’s Hemi Dart rounded out the fourteen-car field carding a best of 9.100 elapsed time.

Texan Fred Hensen left the line together with John Rains driving the “Heli-Hemi” Dart with identical reaction times.  Hensen took the close first round win with his 8.860 to Rains’8.96 ET.

Pennsylvania’s David Barton in the Dart left on Randy Hopkins cutting a .028 reaction time and carding an 8.922 ET at 144.63 to Hopkins 9.001 ET.
