The next quickest Hemi during eliminations was the Barracuda of Larry Woo at an 8.608. Unfortunately for Woo he ran the 8.608 on a red light in his semifinal matchup with Westcott, a race he could have easily won since Westcott, in his only bad run of the weekend, spun the tires at the green and was a sitting duck.
Upsets during eliminations included Jerry Jenkins’ holeshot win over the napping Charlie Westcott Sr. as Jenkins ran an 8.752 to Westcott Sr’s quicker but later 8.640.
Last year’s Dutch Classic champ Jim Pancake’s Dart went out in round two, losing with a good 8.669 to Westcott Jr’s light-years-ahead 8.593.
In the finals it was the purple Cuda of Matt Hensley up against the camouflaged Plymouth of Westcott. Hensley had earlier defeated the California ‘Cuda of Jerry Jenkins in round three and got the bye to the finals. At the green Hensley was first off the line with a 0.065 RT to Westcott’s very late 0.216 light, but the Tennessee ‘Cuda had some tire spin robbing the car of ET and only could run a 8.917 at 153.96 to the War Fish’s 8.565 at 153.72 MPH.
