Mopars vs. the World at Atlanta

Atlanta Dragway hosted the 23rd annual Hayes Southeastern Mopar Meet Sep. 8, featuring a car show, swap meet, car corral and drag racing on the strip. In addition to the meet’s many corporate sponsors, the Lake City Cruisers and North Georgia Mopar Club deserve credit for ensuring the event’s continuing success.
The winner and still champion—John Minette and his trusty ’76 Dodge work van from Hiwassee, GA won the burnout contest for the eighth consecutive year! Contest sponsor Pritchett Tire awarded four new tires for Minette’s crowd-pleasing effort.

The Car Corral held many available-for-sale Mopars, including the '65 "Country Cuda" Plymouth Barracuda campaigned for nearly 20 years by Amos Martin. Presently, the car is conservatively set up for 6.70s in the eighth mile and 10.60s over a quarter-mile course. Martin said he has more than $50,000 invested in the classic racecar, but just $25,000 is on the price tag. "I'm past 70 now,” he added. “I need to let somebody else play with it.” (Tim Glover photo)

Dave Dunbar brought his Diesel Performance Motorsports Dynojet chassis dynomometer to the event, giving free dyno pulls on a first come, first serve basis, courtesy of Hayes Family Dealerships. The biggest numbers MoparMax saw belonged to Hayden O’Leary and his 2004 Dodge DMax with 894 horsepower, but the ’94 Dodge truck of Jim Laydew produced 1145 foot-pounds of torque from just over 642 horsepower.

We dig this groovy ’69 Barracuda complete with matching shirt!

At the swap meet behind the main grandstand there was everything from that hard-to-find badging to complete your classic Mopar project all the way up to the project itself.
