A Look at a Numbers-Matching 1970 Duster 340

Words and photos by Mike Cavalieri

Good morning to all of the Mopar Max readers, my name is Mike Cavalieri, one half of the allegedly famous Squid Brothers and the curator and Chancellor of Big Louie's Institute of Technology...BLIT. While I am active in writing articles for the sister publication, DragRacingOnline.com, I was asked to share with the Mopar Max readers my all numbers matching 1970 Plymouth Duster 340.

My wife, Sue, and I have owned this car for several years and I am fortunate that my wife really enjoys the classic and muscle car scene. Then again, I have been drag racing since I was 9 so it is no surprise that we never have a tee time at the local country club. This car is considered the most comfortable of the three cars we have, as the seating is factory Plymouth buckets and they are much more supportive than the bench seat in our 1937 Chevy street rod and the VW Baja Bug could have marshmallow for foam and it would still be just a bit on the harsh side.

This car retains its original block, heads, transmission and rear end and the engine was mildly upgraded with a .030" over bore, an aftermarket Mopar Performance flat tappet cam and a set of original adjustable rocker arms.

The original carburetor and manifold were not included when I bought the car, so an Edelbrock manifold and carb were installed and work quite well. The transmission features a TCI reverse manual valve body with a low gear sprague, and the rear end ratio is a 3.23-1 with the original Sure-Grip. The car features every option as it appears on the fender tag. Other than headers and a 3" exhaust that exits the factory style tips, and a set of vintage Ansen Sprints, it is a pretty modest yet reliable and fast muscle car.

Thanks for allowing me to share one of my favorite ways to get to the burger joint -- and happy motoring.
